A Statue Turned its Head: Bio

The short version:

I am a twenty-seven year old mother of one who is still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up.

The somewhat longer version:

I was born. I grew up. Sort of.

You might know me as Larisa or Persephone or Pers depending on when you met me online. I've most recently started going by the Internet pseudonym Pers Grayson, but I still can't decide whether to spell "Grayson" with an "a" or as "Greyson."

When I set up my first website about a decade ago, I used my real first name. Today searching for my real first name will turn up about a zillion hits for Tomb Rader related things, but back then the Internet was a smaller place back then, and I found it disturbing just how easy it was to find my site by searching for my first name as I try to keep some parts of my real life and online life separate. I started going by Larisa because it is similar to my real name. Eventually I tired of that and so I switched to Persephone. I still can't remember why.

In 1998 I fell for a man I'd met online. I refer to him as M. on this site. Eventually I left my home in Oregon for his in Canada, and we married in 2001. We live in Edmonton now.

I am mother to the Munchkin-Girl. She was born in September 2003, which means that she is nearly two. Eep. I'm still not sure how that happened. She's the light of my life and makes the world a wonderful place.

I'm a vegetarian and always have been. I'm a liberal. I'm very protective of freedom of speech, though I have the normal dose of hypocrisy and so am more protective when I agree with what is being said than when I don't. I sometimes have to stop for a moment to remind myself of my own beliefs in that regard.

I'm a lactivist. That means I promote breastfeeding. It's what's best for babies. Just as my daughter; she's nearly two, so she can tell you herself.

I read. I have dreams of being a writer someday, but I harbor fears that I'm not really any good. I went to university to study computer science. I've completed three years of my degree, but I'm staying home to be a mom right now. Perhaps someday I'll go back and actually finish, but it's rather depressing to think about it right now because I was just so close to actually being done.

I'm fortunate enough to have been born of the female gender. This means I won't have to get a sex change.

The random bits and pieces:

  • I'm a vegetarian. I always have been - my parents raised me that way.
  • I'd like to be vegan, but I am a very picky eater with little will power so I have yet to manage to give up dairy for more than a few days at a time.
  • The compromise with my non-vegetarian husband is that he doesn't bring meat into our home and I don't bug him when he eats it elsewhere.
  • I have a horse. She's still in Portland, I can't afford to bring her up here right now.
  • We have four cats living with us. They are convinced that we exist to serve them. Spoiled beasts, all.
  • My favorite color is either navy blue or hunter green. I never can decide. There are also other shades of blue and green that I love.
  • When I was a kid my favorite color was bright red.
  • I've green eyes and dark blond hair.
  • Most babies are born with blue eyes, and I was no exception. My mother somehow missed out on the fact that my eyes chaned, and she didn't realize that they weren't blue until maybe a year ago when I had to tell her.
  • My hair was corn-silk blond when I was young. It was just as light as Munchkin's is now.
  • I take too many showers. Often two or three a day, a habit left over from when I would shower in the morning and then need to shower the horse smell off after coming home from the barn.
  • I brush my teeth about a zillion times a day as well. I'm a slob at times, but not with my body.
  • My favorite authors are Kurt Vonnegut and Ursula Leguin.
  • I also love the Harry Potter books.
  • My favorite TV shows are Buffy the vampire slayer and The West Wing
  • I really don't watch very much TV.
  • My favorite food is strawberries. Fresh ones, from the garden. I hate California strawberries.
  • I'm not much of a chocolate fan. I hate dark chocolate and could take or leave other kinds.
  • I don't have a religion. I'm not looking for one, either.
  • Unless you count Secular Humanist as a religion. It's what I put down when asked.
  • I sort of regret that I got married in a church. I did it because it was pretty and all the seats were there and stuff. Now it seems rather hypocritical. I made vows which I mean to keep, but with them I made prayers and devotions that I knew I didn't mean.
  • I don't smoke.
  • I read too much. So much that it gets me into trouble rather frequently. If I start a good book, I won't put it down until I'm finished, homework, sleep, and other responsibilities be damned.
  • I spend way too much time online.
  • I've combined the last two, which means that while I still read real books, I've also developed quite a fan fiction addiction. I'm not even going to tell you just how much I read. It's truly scary.
  • I've written some too. I've written BtVS fanfic in the past, but only a little bit was actually finished enough to go online, and I lost most of my WIPs (nearly a hundred thousand words combined) when my old laptop perished in a tragic water-spillage incident.
  • I'm currently working on a few different HP works-in-progress that I hope to actually finish and post online someday soon.
  • I also completed Nanowrimo last year (2004), though the novel still needs a ton of work. It was also stored on the deceased laptop. Thank goodness I had backed it up to my desktop and several different CDs though, so it's not gone! One of these days I will actually get back to workign on it.
  • I'd love to have really long hair, but I can never get it to grow much below the center of my back. Right now it is just below my shoulders and I need a hair cut. I have very brittle hair - maybe I wash it too much.
  • I got a breadmaker for Christmas a few years ago, and I have rarely bought bread since. Home made bread is yummy.
  • I can't stand white bread. 100% whole wheat for me.
  • I love wind and rain. Storms awaken something inside me that doesn't get out often enough.
  • I like to sew, though I am not very good at it.
  • I procrastinate terribly in almost every thing I do. I put everything off 'till tomorrow and when tomorrow comes I put it off 'till the next day.
